Im not really a beach person, shocking I know! I really do prefer the mountains or even just pretty countryside but when the weathers like this who can resist some barefoot stone collecting :) These pictures are from Achill Island, County Mayo.
Its a lovely beach and wasn't too busy though there were quite a few families there. I love beaches that start as pebbles then go into sand - I like trying to find the 'perfect pebble' such a relaxing way to spend the time :)
We spent the whole of the school holidays in a caravan on the common at Keel on Achill Island for 5 summers when I was 11-15. I have such happy memories! Somewhere I still have a piece of amethyst that I dug up at Keem Bay. Back then it was an incredibly poor area. The only meat available was mutton brought round the islamd in a van by a travelling butcher.
Like you, I love my beaches when they are empty of other people. I remember going to the beach between Castlerock and Portstewart with a friend and her family when I was about 12 or so and the mother saying quite seriously that 'the beach is busy today' because there was another family on it... That is how I like my beaches. And the sand is so good there too. I haven't been to a beach here in England that is anything like as good, although that could just be the ones my husband has taken me to.
I shall be thinking about Achill all morning now : )
Wow that is so cool that you found amethyst there. It sounds so simple and basic back then, I love that though and sort of wish it still was, its quite built up now in the wee towns and stuff.
I lived in devon for a while and the beaches down there were lovely - crowded in the summer though, I hated that...

Thanks michelle, you couldn't take a bad one on a day like that!
ReplyDeleteThat is a beautiful beach and you look so happy together.
ReplyDeleteI do like beaches but in Winter and Spring. They have a different kind of beauty and are much less crowded.
We won't be seeing any beaches in Africa but the amazing Okavango Delta will more than make up for it!

Oh yes, beaches in winter are magical if you get a calm day.
DeleteThat will definitely more than make up for it! You must be getting so excited now that its so close :) x
I'm not much of a beach person either...the mountains and high desert are where my heart is...but that water sure looks beautiful!
ReplyDeleteThe water is stunning but FREEZING lol you can hardly paddle in it! What is high desert? is it just a high altitude desert? with mountains?
