How much does baking your own actually save?

I often wonder this even though I bake for my own enjoyment and that wonderful smell that fills the house! I still want to know so here goes...

how much does baking your own actually save?

Pancake, home baking

This tub of pancakes lasted us a whole week, were super quick to make and really tasty with sweet or savoury toppings. Since they were such a success and I'll be making them again this weekend lets do some sums so I know what I'm saving... Or not saving...

2kg Soda bread flour - £1.20 divided by 5 (used way less than 500g but I don't measure when I bake so its an estimate...) is 24p

6 free range eggs - £1.40 used 3 so thats 70p (we actually got given a dozen farm eggs last week but that was a one off so I'm leaving the egg cost in)

2ltr milk - £1 only used about 1 pint so thats 25p

and thats it for ingredients, we cook on electric so I'd have no idea about that cost, 20p???

Total £1.39 for 13 pancakes and the ones we buy from the bakery if I don't bake at home cost £1 for 4 so thats 25p each compared to 10p each! Less than half price! Brilliant! Have you ever done the sums on your baking or do you just do it for fun?

  1. Nope - haven't done the sums, because I know it's saving me even more in the long run due to the fact that I am NOT shoving chemicals into my body :)

  2. Try costing out a sponge cake. It is WAY cheaper than a bought one. And the bought one just is not in the same league as a tasty homemade one - and that is without factoring in Dani's chemicals.

    1. I know jo the taste really is worth it alone! I think I picked the most expensive thing actually, things like white pasta sauce and cakes are a million times cheaper!

  4. I read somewhere the other day that with the price of ingredients going up, home baking may not be as economical as it once was. Who cares! I much prefer to bake, as I still believe that baking is the way to go. You yield more per batch than per packet, it tastes way better, and as already stated above, you know what is in it. I find it very soul destroying to buy a packet of (expensive these days) biscuits & have my teenage boys open it - nek minnit - they are all gone!

    1. Yeah even in my baking life ive noticed the prices going up, im hoping to find a bulk buy shop one day to bring that down a bit. So glad lots of you are bakers :) Its funny how if a bought packet disappears in a second its annoying but I think a baked batch is different, i just feel proud, they must have been good lol

  5. I made some Ferrero Rocher chocolates for my boyfriend's mum, as they're her favourites. My receipe made about 30, and ended up being less than half the price of the shop bought ones, even using decent ingredients. (They even had petit fours cases!)

I think even if it works out around the same, homemade is always better! (Unless I burn it.. always a possibility!)
